Professor Jan Woleński Honorary Doctor of the University of Lodz
On January 14th, 2020, Professor Jan Woleński, an outstanding Polish philosopher, graduate and long-term lecturer at the Jagiellonian University, and friend of the Roman Ingarden Centre for Philosophical Research, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Łódź. The awarding of the title resulted from the initiative of two faculties: The Faculty of Philosophy and History and the Faculty of Law and Administration.
“He exemplifies a committed philosopher who is not indifferent to the reality around him. Furthermore, he is committed to ensuring that philosophical thinking in Poland is an important part of culture, encouraging discussions on important issues of social life, as well as ensuring that it is more widely recognized beyond national borders. What should be added in this respect is that he himself has contributed significantly,” wrote Prof. Ryszard Kleszcz from the University of Lodz in a review of his doctorate.
“Neither should the extensive public activity of Woleński be overlooked since he is known as a tireless defender of rationality, who believes that the power of argument can overcome the strongest prejudices, and that a clear style and transparency of thought provide an antidote to eristic tricks and gibberish that overwhelms social and political discourse,” said Prof. Bartosz Brożek from the Jagiellonian University.
“Polish philosophers usually do not rank in being among the world’s leading thinkers. Thanks to the talent and enormous amount of work of Jan Woleński, he has been able to reach such an excellent standing in the world. More than any other compatriot, he also helped to promote the achievements of earlier Polish logicians and philosophers,” noted the third reviewer of Woleński’s doctorate, Professor Jerzy Pogonowski from Adam Mickiewicz University.
We enclose congratulatory letters to Professor Woleński from the Prodean of the Faculty of Philosophy for General Affairs of Dr Jacek Nowak, Prof. UJ and the Prodean of the Faculty of Philosophy for Teaching Affairs of Prof. Leszek Sosnowski.
